Chapter 12

An image of the Prime Minister filled the TV screen. He was sitting at a desk in what I assumed was his office and he looked like he hadn’t slept in days. In fairness to him he probably hadn’t. His tailored blue suit was dishevelled and his grey hair lacked its usual verve. He looked directly at the camera and started speaking in his crisp Etonian voice.

“People of Britain, please let me start by apologising for interrupting your viewing. All is not well in our country this evening, nor is it in the rest of the world. The international community is facing a crisis the likes of which it has never seen before.”

Pete scoffed. “No shit.”

Mum glared at him.

“You will have heard news reports of a narcotic that is turning people into murderers. Let me tell you now; these reports are not entirely accurate. These people are not drug addicts, they are normal people like you and me, who have just had the misfortune to be infected by some form of virus that induces mental illness. As a result these people are not in their right minds and are not responsible for their own actions. They are extremely dangerous and should not be approached or spoken to for any reason.”

I nodded to myself. A virus made sense, but they were more than just mad. They were dead, for God’s sake.

“The latest figures that I have been given show that only a few thousand people have been infected—”

Jeff shook his head. “That can’t be right. Can it?”

“But due to the nature of the illness and because we take public health matters extremely seriously, the House of Commons, after taking advisement from National Health Agencies, has reached a cross-party consensus to confine everybody throughout the entire United Kingdom to their homes until further notice so that the Emergency Services, reinforced by the Armed Forces, can protect the country and get the infected individuals the help that they so badly need—”

Graeme nodded. “At least they’re doing something.”

“We do not foresee too many problems with the operation and we are all very confident that the illness is treatable and that normality will be restored before the weekend is out. I have spoken to other world leaders and they are taking similar steps in their own countries. You may think that these measures are extreme but there is nothing that I take more seriously than the wellbeing of the citizens of this great country.”

Jeff got to his feet. “Bloody hell! I can’t believe that this is happening all over the world.”

“Please be safe and heed this advice. I will ensure that our progress is relayed to you all as and when we have any news.”

The transmission finished and the room was in total silence.

Jeff stepped in front of the TV. “Was it just me or did it seem like he was speaking to us like we’re idiots? I mean things are blatantly worse than what he’s saying.
